Metamorphosis of the 2018 Subaru Outback near McComb, MS

The 2018 Subaru Outback near McComb, MS is a perfect example of metamorphosis; it’s changed from a rugged wagon to something resembling an SUV. Whatever a shopper wants to call it, the Outback is still a hit, and for good reasons. It’s efficient, roomy, comfortable, and has great resale value. Add its safety, great technology, and various driver assistance features, and there’s more to like. Whether a driver wants a fuel-efficient, reliable crossover, or one of the safest vehicles on the market, the Outback is a great choice.

New for 2018

The Subaru Outback gets a great update that includes a more robust infotainment system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard, and there are minor updates inside and out. Additions such as sound-dampening glass and suspension tuning make the vehicle quieter on the inside and smoother on Mississippi’s roads.

Our Impression

Because the Outback shares a platform with the Legacy, it’s not a surprise that it feels more like a sedan than an SUV. Its increased ground clearance allows it to absorb bumps, and the four-cylinder engine that powers most Outbacks is adequate for passing and acceleration. The CVT is very efficient, and the six-cylinder on higher trims packs a real punch. With its great AWD system and X-Mode off-road capabilities, the Subaru Outback can take drivers wherever they want to go.

Our Favorite Features

·         X-Mode comes standard on all Outbacks. It’s designed to keep the vehicle stable even on difficult terrain, and hill descent assist takes over the braking chores on steep downhill grades.

·         Starlink has been upgraded for this year, and some of the improvements are surprising. Smartphone integration is now standard, and new apps are helpful indeed.

On the Inside

Every Outback has a two-row, five-passenger configuration, and roominess is one of the vehicle’s biggest advantages. There’s plentiful legroom for second-row passengers, and cargo capacity is excellent. With the rear seats folded, there’s 73.3 cu. ft. of usable space. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, and there’s great all-around visibility. Controls are easy to use, and the Touring edition can easily pass for a luxury SUV.

Exterior

The 2018 Subaru Outback near McComb, MS continues to make the transition from a high wagon to a legitimate crossover. This year’s updates give the vehicle a bolder attitude, and the most notable changes are on the front. The grille and headlights have been tweaked, and responsive units are available. Lower-body cladding, and roof racks increase the Outback’s appeal, as do the door sills that make it easier to access the roof rack.

Standard Equipment

The 2018 Subaru Outback near McComb, MS is available in four trims: the base, the Premium, the Limited, and the Touring. Even the base model comes with AWD and X-Mode, an auto transmission, adjustable driver’s seat, auto headlights, a touchscreen infotainment system, smartphone integration, 17” wheels, and cruise control. We like the Premium, which comes with a larger eight-inch touchscreen, more speakers, a CD player, dual climate controls, power adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seating, and additional USB ports. Premium buyers have the ability to add more options as well.

Add-Ons and Options

By opting for a higher trim level or checking more options boxes, shoppers can outfit their Outback with the great EyeSight driver safety system. It combines lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, reverse auto braking, and pre-collision braking. The optional power liftgate has a selectable maximum height, and voice-activated navigation system makes it easy for drivers to get where they need to go. Other available add-ons include a leather interior with faux wood trim, along with an upgraded audio system.

A Peek Under the Hood

Subarus use boxer engines, where pistons run parallel to the ground. The boxer layout decreases the vehicle’s center of gravity, which improves handling and cornering stability. There are two engine choices available. The 2.5L four-cylinder puts out 175hp, while the six-cylinder offers 256hp; both route power through a CVT with paddle shifters and AWD. As mentioned before, the AWD comes with X-Mode for traction at low speeds, as well as torque vectoring for high-speed cornering. All Outbacks can tow up to 2700 pounds, which makes them ideal for weekend boating trips.
