Subaru Global Platform Debuts With 2017 Impreza Near Picayune, MS

New 2017 Subaru Impreza Global Platform

The new-for-2017 Subaru Global Platform was given its debut with the beautifully designed 2017 Subaru Impreza compact.  This all-new platform, along with the three Subaru core technologies - boxer engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and EyeSight - is said to set the foundation for next generation of Subaru vehicles.  This foundation will lead to the enhancement of the Subaru brand as well as marking, "the next step in the evolution of 'Enjoyment and Peace of Mind'" per Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, President of Fuji Heavy Industries.  Focusing on safety, refinement, and adaptability, Subaru's new global platform makes up a portion of the six initiatives to enhance the well-known brand.

Enhanced Ride Experience

Included in the safety and refinement fragments of the new Subaru global platform is utilization of new welding processes and structural adhesives to strengthen cowl areas and sides, resulting in a 70 percent increase in body and chassis rigidity.  This significant increase in rigidity combined with the use of high tensile steels is acting to improve absorption of impact-energy by 40 percent over current Subaru models (models before the 2017 Subaru Impreza).  In addition to safety, the stiffer chassis offers a more consistent ride experience over diverse road surfaces and varied passenger and cargo loads.

A lower center of gravity in new Subaru models also affects consistency of the ride experience.  Handling becomes more responsive, resulting in improved accident avoidance as well as a more exciting driving experience.  Working together with center of gravity to present enhanced performance and comfort is enhancements in straight-line stability, which allows the vehicle to move forward in a straight line at high speeds with minimum effort on the driver's part.  With enhances straight-line stability, cornering, is generally sacrificed, however with the new global platform, both straight-line stability and cornering have been improved.  Assisting straight-line stability and cornering is a wider track, able to accommodate larger wheels and tires.

Safety and Dependability

Despite the refinements made to accommodate larger wheels and tires and to strengthen the body and chassis, models built within the new global platform weigh only slightly more than those build beforehand.  For example, the new 2017 Subaru Impreza is larger and holds more content, but only weight about 20 pounds more than the previous model.  With this decrease in weight and increase in stability comes reduced noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) from the steering wheel, floor, and seats.  Though weight is lessened, durability and longevity are not.

With the new global platform, Subaru vehicles are being designed to last even longer and prove stronger than all other makes with the goal of maintaining the highest levels of collision safety in the world.  To achieve this goal, new Subaru vehicles are being built to meet current and future safety standards.  Instead of being mounted to a subframe, rear anti-roll bars are now being mounted directly to the body, reducing body roll by 50 percent compared to previous models. An even larger step than roll bars is where the adaptability portion of the new global platform comes in.  Modularity is Subaru's most significant step towards adapting to future safety standards.  This will enable fitment of new, enhanced parts in addition to allow less complex replacement of old, worn or damages vehicle parts.

The new Subaru global platform, already proving itself with the 2017 Subaru Impreza, will continue making great strides towards the Subaru of tomorrow.  Meeting impending safety standards and accommodating future adaptations to the Subaru line are some of the fundamental building blocks of the global platform, focused on safety, refinement, and adaptability.  The new platform is one that Subaru lovers across the globe can appreciate.
